Rental Reprieve

Aging apartment buildings Brooklyn Park, Minn., received a reprieve when voters rejected a $35 million bond referendum to destroy them. Now Hennepin County officials have pledged $4 million to renovate the apartments and are looking at tax-increment financing to provide additional funding. “If you have to buy out the housing, $4 million doesn’t take you very far,” says Larry Blackstad, community works division manager for the county.
